MilitaryCharles Owen Rivet enlisted during World War I with the U.S. Navy, on 26 Jul 1917 at the recruiting station at Houston, Harris County, TX. He gave his home address as Beaumont, Texas. With the initial rate of Machinist Mate Second Class, he was received as a crew member aboard the USS Nebraska at Norfolk, VA. He soon was promoted to Machinist Mate First Class.6 The Nebraska served in the Atlantic as a convoy escort to Europe, and at the end of the war she made several trips to carry American soldiers back from France. In June 1919, she was transferred to the Pacific Fleet.7 Owen was discharged on 21 Oct 1919 at Mare Island, CA.6

During the week before the census was taken, he worked 40 hours as a machinist in the Pipeline department of an oil company, and earned $1,800 in 1939. Gertrude had two years of high school, and worked in the home.10
