Research Notes:

I received from another Esclapon researcher a copy of a record of a family burial vault at Libourne, Department de la Gironde, Aquitaine, France. The vault was purchased by Ulysse Esclapon on 20 Oct 1870. Most of the people buried there appear to be descendants and relatives of Jean Francois Esclapon and Marie Gautier, including people with surnames Esclapon, Jannet, Folivet, and others. On the vault is engraved: "Pierre Isidore Esclapon y repose. Mort à la nouvelle Orléans le 14 Aout 1868" ("Pierre Isidore Esclapon rests here. Died in New Orleans on 14 Aug 1868"). So it appears that his son Ulysse repatriated his father's body in Libourne.
The name "Clothilde Moral" appears on the list of burials for this vault. Clothilde Morales was the grandmother of Ulysse Esclapon, and was known to have lived together with Ulysse and his parents during the 1860 U.S. census. This family was not found in the 1870 U.S. census records. Now we know why!
It appears that Ulysse moved to France sometime between 1868 and 1870. His grandmother probably moved with him, but could have moved sometime after that. It is not known where Gertrude was during this time, but may be possible she went with them as no further records are found of her. (It is unknown when or where she died, or where she was buried.)
Additional research needs to be conducted to find their emigration record, and a record of Gertrude's death and/or burial, and also to determine whether Ulysse later had a family of his own in France. No mention is made of Ulysse's burial in the family vault.2
