MilitarySamuel Barnhisel served in the military for the Union during the Civil War. He was drafted and enrolled 9 Dec 1864 at LaPorte, IN, and was a member of the 12th Regiment, Company I. He was transferred to the 59th Regiment on 18 May 1965.5
MarriageHe married Samantha Harmon, daughter of Jacog Harmon and Sarah Seitner, probably about Nov 1869 at Gilead, Miami County, IN. Note that her obituary says they were married 21 Jan 1877, but the 1870 census shows otherwise.6,7

Will, Executor-HeirIn his father Jacob Barnhisel's will, dated 7 Mar 1876 at Miami County, IN, Samuel Barnhisel was named as executor, as well as an heir. He was to inherit the farm on which his father lived, and in turn had to pay the other heirs (his siblings and their heirs) a total of $6,000. He also was obliged to allow his mother to live on the farm, and make a living from the farm, by not denying her "any reasonable demands such as pasture and feed for any cows or cow she may see fit to stud, to see that she has proper food, fuel and clothing and all other proper attention."8
