RESEARCH NOTE
There was a family rumor that Theophile was married briefly before Emma, but for years we didn't think much of it since no evidence had ever turned up. However, while reviewing the 1930 census again, it was like a flash of lightning when we realized that he states his first marriage was at age 18, which would put it around 1898. We believe he married Emma around 1911, since he stated he was single in the 1910 census, and his son Denis was born in 1912. Emma would have been only 8 years old in 1898, so he could not have married Emma that early. (Unfortunately Emma had died by 1930, so we don't know her age at her first marriage.) Maybe it is possible there is something to the early marriage rumor after all, but the evidence is still pretty slim. For now, we are considering his marriage to Emma to be his first, until we can find something more substantial.5
