Military*between 1862 and 1865 Joseph Valliere Rivet served in the military between 1862 and 1865 as a Private for the Confederacy during the Civil War. He enlisted in Assumption Parish in Capt. E. E. Lauve's Company, Co. H 28th Regiment Louisiana Volunteers under Col. Allen Thomas.
He was badly wounded during the Seige of Vicksburg, "pierced through the body by a minnie ball, the ball entering my body right below my right nipple and came out in my back under my shoulder blade, the ball passing through my lungs." He was in the hospital at Vicksburg, a prisoner of war after the surrender at Vicksburg. He was not discharged, but recovered sufficiently to remain until the close of the war. After Vicksburg, he was paroled by the Federals and removed by them into the Confederate lines at Mobile, Alabama. At the time of the Confederate surrender, he was near Mansfield in DeSoto Parish, La.5,2 
Marriage*18 Apr 1864 He married Celima Richard, daughter of Jean Marie Richard and Elisa Braud, on 18 Apr 1864 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church at Paincourtville, Assumption Parish, LA. Witnesses were Nicols Blanchard, Sosthene Simoneau, Victorin Hebert, Oreleise Rivete, Eugenie Hebert, and Cefroni Rivete.1
